“MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund) is a national legal civil rights organization, whose mission is to promote the civil rights of all Latino living in the United States. MALDEF opened its doors in 1968 in San Antonio, Texas, following coordinated efforts by Latino lawyers and community activists from throughout the southwestern United States to create a legal organization to serve the Latino community.
In the nearly 50 years since its founding, MALDEF has grown and expanded to become the Latino leading legal voice on civil rights in the United States. Sometimes referred to as the law firm of the Latino community, MALDEF pursues its mission through a four-pronged approach: litigation, public policy education and advocacy, community education, and communications. MALDEF’s Board of Directors has identified four program areas in which MALDEF pursues its work: education, employment, and economic empowerment, immigrants’ rights, and voting rights and political access.
In April of this year, MALDEF filed a legal challenge on behalf of Emil J. Santos, who was unlawfully detained by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Although a judge ordered him to be released on a $20,000 bond, the Sheriff’s Office continued to hold Santos on an indefinite “immigrant hold.” These battles may be on the front lines of Chicago, but the echo of each case greatly affects Latinos across the nation. The importance of MALDEF’s work as the law firm for the Latino community is greater now than ever before.”
